1744 A competition was held by the Gentlemen Golfers of Leith over Leith Links for the prize of a silver golf club. Ten Gentlemen competed, and the winner was "Mr John Rattray Surgeon in Edinburgh", who had drafted the original 'Articles & Laws in Playing at Golf' a few weeks earlier on March 7. A silver ball with the winner's name on it was attached to the club, a tradition which endures to this day among the Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers, successors to the Gentlemen Golfers of Leith, who are now decorating the fourth such silver club.
