1986 The first Sony Ranking is published and is headed by three Europeans, with Bernhard Langer, Seve Ballesteros and Sandy Lyle as the first, second and third ranked players in the world. The leading American at No.4 is Tom Watson. The publication comes the week before the Masters Tournament, and the system follows the method of calculation used by Mark H. McCormack in his 'World of Professional Golf' annual since 1968. It would continue to be known as the Sony Ranking until 1995, when the five main men's professional tours all endorsed it and changed its name to the Official World Golf Ranking.
