1957 Severiano 'Seve' Ballesteros is born in Pedreña, Cantabria, Spain. Sheer natural talent and a flamboyant playing style - developed playing on a beach near his home - earned him the all-time record for the most victories on the European Tour (50), and five major championships (The Masters of 1980 & 1983, and the Open Championships of 1979, 1984 & 1988). He is widely considered to be the main architect of the revival of European golf on the world stage, following several decades of American domination, and undoubtedly brought interest back to the Ryder Cup matches, both as a player and a Captain, once European players were included in the teams to face the US. Severe back problems and brain cancer slowed and ultimately halted his playing career.
