1965 Dave Marr wins the PGA Championship at Laurel Valley Golf Club, Pennsylvania, by two shots from Billy Casper and Jack Nicklaus. The same year he played in the US Ryder Cup team, winning four points out of a possible six, and was named PGA Player of the Year. In later years Marr turned to television commentary, working for ABC, NBC and the BBC.
He died in 1997, aged 63, of stomach cancer and his ashes were scattered on three of his favourite golf courses: on the 18th at Laurel Valley, scene of his PGA victory, at Royal Birkdale, venue of the 1965 Ryder Cup, and at Walton Heath, where he was non-playing Captain of the US Ryder Cup team in 1981, winning 18½ points to 9½, the heaviest defeat ever inflicted on Europe in the contest.
