2008 Jiyai Shin wins her first major championship and first LPGA Tour event in the Ricoh Women's British Open at Sunningdale, beating Yani Tseng by three shots. It was the first victory in a major championship by a non-LPGA Tour member since since Laura Davies claimed the U.S. Women's Open in 1987.
The 20 year old Shin had distingished herself the previous year on the Korean LPGA Tour by winning 10 out of 19 events entered, an all-time record; in total she amassd 21 victories on the KLPGA between 2005 and 2010. She won a second major, again at the Women's British Open, in 2012 and to date (July 2013) has 11 LPGA wins to her name. Shin reached Women's World No. 1 in May 2010 and held the position for seven weeks. She had two more stints at No. 1 up to February 2011 and in total has held the position for 25 weeks.
