1969 Marvin M. 'Vinny' Giles III finishes runner-up for the third year in a row in the US Amateur Championship at Oakmont, the only person ever to achieve this unfortunate record. On this occasion he was five shots behind winner Steve Melnyk, after being one behind Bruce Fleisher in 1968 and one behind Robert B. Dickson in 1967, this being the brief period from 1965-72 when the US Championship was decided entirely by stroke play.
Giles would however finally take the title in 1972, when he triumphed by three shots ahead of Ben Crenshaw and Mark Hayes. He also won the (British) Amateur Championship in 1975, and was a member of the four US Walker Cup teams from 1969 to 1975, on the winning side three times, before going on to captain the 1993 US team to victory.
