2003 Tom Watson wins his first Senior British Open at Turnberry, scene of his epic 1977 'Duel in the Sun' with Jack Nicklaus. Unlike 1977, this victory did go to a playoff, with Watson triumphing at the second extra hole over Carl Mason, who was playing in only his third senior event, after Mason double-bogeyed the 18th to fall into a tie. Watson's closing 64 followed rounds of 66-67-66 for a four round total of 263, five fewer than his 1977 total. The win was the second of Watson's six senior majors to date, which include two more Senior British in 2005 (Royal Aberdeen) and 2007 (Muirfield). Watson dedicated his win to long-time friend and caddy Bruce Edwards, who was diagnosed with ALS/Lou Gehrig's disease four months earlier and who died the following April.
