1953 The first Canada Cup (called the World Cup from 1966 onwards) begins at Beaconsfield Golf Club, Quebec, Canada. The two-day event involving nine national teams of two is won by Argentina, represented by Roberto de Vicenzo and Antonio Cerda, with a score of 287, 10 strokes ahead of Canada. Sadly, Canada never won the Canada Cup, although they won the event in 1968 in Rome - once it had become the World Cup. The event was founded by Canadian industrialist John Jay Hopkins, with the hope of promoting goodwill between nations through golf. (Full records here)
