Alex Smith of Carnoustie, Scotland, wins the US Open at the Onwentsia Club in Lake Forest, Illinois, beating his brother Willie by seven shots. Amazingly, Willie's brother-in-law brother-in-law James Maiden tied for third three shots further back. Smith's winning total of 295 set a new US Open record, and was the first sub-300 score in the Championship. He also lost in a playoff with Willie Anderson, another Scot from North Berwick, for the 1901 US Open, and went on to gain a second victory in 1910.
Smith had two brothers who played professional golf in the US; Willie, who himself won the US Open in 1899, and Macdonald, whom he defeated, this time in a three-way playoff, for the 1910 US Open alongside American John McDermott. |
