1927 The first official Ryder Cup match begins at Worcester Country Club, Massachussets, with captains Walter Hagen and Ted Ray (who both played) captaining the US and GB eight men teams. They played one set of foursomes and one set of singles. Sadly, the Cup's founder and benefactor, Samuel Ryder, was unable to attend due to poor health. The United States won the match 9½-2½, prompting Ted Ray to say "One of the chief reasons for our failure was the superior putting of the American team."
