||William 'Willie' Park Snr. was born in Musselburgh, Scotland, and began his working life as a caddie. As a professional he was known as a long hitter, yet with a fine putting touch and played aggressive golf, well suited to the many challenge matches which were played in front of galleries with contemporaries such as 'Old' Tom Morris for substantial purses.
When the first Open Championship was held in 1860 with just eight entrants, Park won at the age of 27, and would go on to win three more times in 1863, 1866 and 1875. His brother Mungo also won The Open in 1874, and his son Willie Jnr won in 1887 and 1889, making the Parks as a family the second most successful of all time in The Open with seven victories, behind 'Old' and 'Young' Tom Morris with eight, four victories each.
