2001 Des Smyth becomes the oldest winner on the European Tour when he captures the Madeira Islands Open at Santo da Serra aged 48 years and 34 days, surpassing Neil Coles who was 48 years and 12 days when he won the 1982 Sanyo Open. It was Smyth's eighth win, and gave him at least one victory in four successive decades, having first won in 1979.
His record has since been beaten twice by Miguel Angel Jiménez at the Hong Kong Open in 2012 and 2013.
