1744 The original Rules of Golf are drafted by the Gentlemen Golfers of Leith, later to become the Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers, in preparation for a match to be played over Leith Links on April 2. Properly entitled "Articles & Laws in Playing at Golf ", there are just thirteen of them, the 13th being a local rule, for a total of 356 words, numbering included. The Rules are signed "John Rattray, Capt", who would subsequently win the match. (See also April 2)
