2011 Luke Donald wins the BMW PGA Championship with a birdie at the first extra hole of a playoff with Lee Westwood, after both finished on 278, 6 under par, taking Donald to the World No. 1 spot for the first time, and displacing Westwood who had occupied the position twice, for 17 and 5 weeks. Donald becomes the third Englishman to hold the no. 1 spot, after Nick Faldo and Lee Westwood.
1966 Jean Van de Velde was born in Mont-de-Marsan, France. Twice a winner on the European Tour, he is sadly most famous for 'losing' the 1999 Open Championship at Carnoustie, after needing only a double-bogey 6 on the 72nd hole for victory. He eventually took 7, after a visit to the Barry Burn, and lost in a playoff with Justin Leonard and eventual Champion Paul Lawrie.
