1978 In the second round of the Italian Open at Pevero Golf Club, Sardinia, Mark James returned a score of 111. Complaining of an injured left wrist, he played the final holes one-handed in a total of 51 shots. He claimed he didn't dare to withdraw with his injury, having been fined £50 by the Tour in 1977 after pulling out of a tournament with a wrenched knee. This remains the highest 18 hole score in the history of the European Tour.
