1997 David Duval wins the Tour Championship at the Champions Golf Club in Houston, Texas and takes his third straight title in a month, which were also his first three PGA Tour victories. They came after competing in 92 events without a win since joining the Tour in 1995. The last time a player had won three in a row was Nick Price in 1993, but Duval was the first and still the only player to make his first three wins consecutive. Prior to the Tour Championship he had won the Michelob Championship and the Walt Disney World/Oldsmobile Classic, and although he did enter the Las Vegas Invitational the week after these, he withdrew before the start, citing exhaustion following his first two wins.
1947 The USA win the 7th Ryder Cup 11-1 at Portland Golf Club in Oregon, USA, the first post-war playing of the event since it was suspended in 1939. It was GB&I's heaviest defeat in the Matches since they began in 1927, and remains to this day the closest one side has come to not winning any points at all. Ben Hogan captained the US side and Henry Cotton the GB&I team, and both of them played, Hogan once (winning in the Foursomes with Jimmy Demaret) and Cotton twice (losing in both the foursomes and singles). The US win of 1947 took the overall score to date to 5-2 in favour of the US.
