1891 The Golfing Union of Ireland (GUI) - the oldest national golf union in the world - is founded in Belfast. There were already 28 golf clubs (or 'greens', as they were known) in Ireland at the time, although the Union was initially formed by just nine of them, all from Ulster.
Following the Union's foundation and better administration of the game, almost one hundred new clubs had been formed by the end of the century. Today, as the governing body for men's and boy's amateur golf in Ireland, the GUI represents some 430 clubs and more than 150,000 members.
