1962 Playing the 170 yard first hole at Ely, Cambridgeshire in a knock-out competition, a Mr Challis drove to within 4 feet of the hole. His opponent missed the green, but his pitch then struck Mr Challis' ball, knocking it in for an unusual, but perfectly legitimate (Rule 27-2b), hole in one.
