2011 Rory McIlroy wins the biggest first prize in golf - $2 million - at the unofficial Lake Malaren Shanghai Masters in Luodian, Shanghai, defeating Anthony Kim with a par at the first hole of a playoff, after losing a three shot lead entering the final round. The 30 man event offered a total purse of $5 million, with last place guaranteeing $25,000, as well as substantial appearance money to all the star players.
In 2012 it was made an official European Tour stop under the name BMW Masters, and the prize money was increased to $7 million for the 78 man field. McIlroy finished runner-up to Peter Hanson by one shot.
