1891 Hugh Kirkaldy wins the last Open Championship to be played over 36 holes, at St Andrews. His score of 166, despite bitter easterly winds and lashing rain, beat the previous 36-hole record for an Open at the Old Course by five shots. Hugh's elder brother, Andrew, was one of two runners-up, two strokes adrift. From 1892 onwards, the Open is played over 72 holes, beginning at Muirfield.
