1890 Amateur John Ball Jr wins the Open Championship on a very windy day at Prestwick with a 36 hole score of 82-82=164, three shots better than professionals Archie Simpson and Willie Fernie, and created a number of golfing firsts. He was the first amateur to win The Open, although amateurs had been taking part since the second Open in 1861. He was the first non-Scot and first Englishman to win, having been born in Hoylake and learned his golf at Royal Liverpool. Ball was also the first to win the Amateur Championship (the second of his record eight wins) and Open Championship in the same year, a record equalled only once since then by the great Bobby Jones in 1930, for the first two legs of his Grand Slam.
