||The 23rd Ryder Cup matches begin at the Greenbrier, West Virginia, and for the first time between the United States and the Continent of Europe, replacing the old format of US vs. Great Britain & Ireland. Only two players from outside GB&I in fact played, both Spaniards - Seve Ballesteros and Antonio Garrido - and their inclusion made little difference to the American domination of the contest which the US won by 17 points to 11. (Below, the European team with non-playing Captain John Jacobs)
It would take three more contests before Europe finally achieved a win at The Belfy in 1985, where Tony Jacklin's team triumped by 16½ to 11½, the first defeat for the US since 1957, and only their third since the Cup began in 1927. However, beginning in 1985, the inclusion of Europe would result in 10 victories out of the 14 matches contested up to 2012.
