1989 Christy O'Connor Jnr hits one of the finest and most famous shots in Ryder Cup history, rifling a 2-iron to 4 feet at the Belfry's iconic 18th to beat Fred Couples by 1 hole and help Europe to secure just the second tie in the history of the Cup. Already winners in 1985 and 1987, it meant that Europe held the Ryder Cup for a third straight time, having lost the first three matches played as Team Europe from 1979-1983.
O'Connor had played in the 1975 losing GB&I team without scoring from his two games, and had lost in the foursomes on Saturday in 1989 before his Sunday singles with Couples. However his lone Ryder Cup point secured with the 2-iron was a key moment in Europe's growing rivalry with the US that has now seen them win 10 of the 17 matches played since 1979.
