Course Designer Golf started in Observatory over a 9-hole course in 1912 and Observatory Golf Club was officially established in 1914, with the course extended to 18 holes in 1922. Observatory Golf Club is the oldest golf club in Johannesburg still operating from its original ground.
From the N3, take the R24 (west) towards Johannesburg. At the first traffic lights turn right into Marcia Street. Carry on over four sets of traffic lights, the road becomes Observatory Road. Just before the fifth traffic light, turn right into Phile Street. Follow the course boundary fence to the entrance.

Description Home Club of Bobby Locke, South Africa first Major winner. (He won the Open Championship four times between 1949 and 1957.)
The course has very good drainage.

When next you visit Johannesburg, make Observatory your golf course of first choice. Velvety greens running true, second to none. Narrow fairways challenge your drive. No fairway is level or flat. No green is level or flat. (I left my 12 deg Adams in the bag and used my 17 deg XX10 to good effect) As a first timer there were surprises around every corner.
I have played the Old Course, Carnoustie and others and rate Observatory as an exellent challenge for any level of golfer.
