Why we can't afford to be without golf insurance

by Clive Carpenter, Editor

We’re delighted to have caught up with the UK’s No.1 golf insurance provider – Golf Care – to find out more about the importance of having adequate cover when on course.

Amazingly, research suggest that 9 out of 10 golfers are not insured, with many golfers taking to the course believing their household insurance will automatically take care of things.

In fact, very few policies will cover us if:

• We hit another person;
• We are hit and suffer injury, require hospitalisation, or dental care;
• Our golf clubs are lost or damaged;
• Our clubs are stolen away from home;
• We break a window or roof tile, or hit a car;
• We make a Hole-in-One and have to buy drinks all round;
• We are hit while a spectator at a golf event;
• We suffer or cause an accident at the driving range.

The figures involved can be quite startling

In recent years, a judge awarded £397,000 in compensation to a golfer who lost an eye after being hit by a golf ball. The club involved was held liable for 30%, but the player who hit the ball was ordered to pay 70% - £278,000 - to his 'victim'.

More than 10,000 golfers in the UK every year need hospital treatment for injuries sustained on the golf course. That's over 10,000 potential lawsuits!

What's our golf kit worth? With an electric trolley, a decent bag of clubs, good shoes and waterproofs, there's not much change out of £1500 there. Unsurprisingly, golf equipment thefts are rising every year and in March 2014, a Birmingham gang were jailed for stealing more than £750,000 worth of equipment from golf clubs – whilst posing as genuine golfers.

Don’t gamble on the course!

We recommend all golfers purchase a specialist golf insurance policy so we've teamed up with Golf Care, the leading UK provider, who can offer a range of policies designed to suit you at the lowest prices. Golf Today readers can benefit from 30% off any policy, plus you'll also get 6 FREE TaylorMade golf balls and 3 FREE rounds of golf with any policy.
