FootJoy Puts Best Foot Forward
by John Steinbreder - August 20, 2012

Most golfers don’t give much thought to the socks they wear when they tee it up, or the technology used to make them. But the folks at FootJoy have long considered hosiery to be important pieces of golf equipment. Hence the company’s development of Merino Tour.

They say that Merino Tour socks use fine merino wool yarns that naturally regulate temperature and manage moisture so that feet remain dry and comfortable. In addition, breathable mesh inserts are employed in key stress areas to boost ventilation, and a so-called Comfort Seam Toe Enclosure is designed to provide a smoother fit.

A double-layer reinforced heel is included in Merino Tour for added durability, and the socks come with anatomically shaped left and right foot beds for a contoured fit as well as enhanced cushioning in high impact areas. That’s why the socks have either an “L” or an “R” on them.

Merino wool may seem a strange material for golf socks to some, but FootJoy officials, who have been making golf hosiery for three decades, say it works brilliantly. For starters, the company uses a fine grade of merino comprised of long, silky fibers that make for a sock that is soft and not itchy – and made to be comfortable in both cool and warm conditions. And FootJoy believes the fiber, which boasts natural wicking properties, is better suited for athletic endeavors than cotton, which tends to absorb sweat during activity and dries more slowly.

The FootJoy Merino Tour golf socks come in two styles: crew and sport. Both are available in the color black, with the crew socks also made in charcoal, and the sport in natural.
