A Mediterranean masterpiece - Is Arenas Golf & Country Club

Robert Von Hagge has a knack for designing some splendid golf courses and in Europe these include the stunning Les Bordes, considered one of the best in Europe, the exquisite Kempferhof golf course in east France, as well as classics like Seignosse and Royal Mougins. He even had a helping hand designing Le Golf National, the Ryder Cup venue for 2018.

His latest masterpiece though is located in western Sardinia right on the Mediterranean coastline, and is called the Is Arenas Golf & Country Club. The resort the golf course is on consists of a 5* hotel, the majestic yet challenging golf course, decent practise facilities, and even a private beach.

The course was built in 2001 and the 18 holes weave majestically through the pine woodland. Very few holes run side-by-side emphasising the feeling of solitude and enhances the secluded nature of the site. The pine forest does more than just provide a stunning natural setting, it also shelters from the sea breeze blowing in from the coast.

Although, this is the least of your worries as on many of the holes if you miss the fairway, the dense gorse and undergrowth will gratefully swallow your ball. With the narrow fairways, unforgiving rough, a myriad of large bunkers, tough par 3’s and being just short of 7,000 yards, this course is no push-over! The condition of the golf course is immaculate, and with carpet fairways and pristine greens, if you do hit the ball straight you will be in for a real treat. When on the 17th tee box, take 2 minutes to enjoy the view over the deep blue Mediterranean Sea.

The hotel onsite is the Golf Hotel Is Arenas and it is 5* bliss, with a choice of hotel rooms and villas. There is a large outdoor pool as well as a private beach reserved exclusively for hotel guests. There is also a boutique spa offering a range of massages and treatments. Guests can also enjoy the Turkish baths with the warm and cold get showers, the Technogym and beauty zone.

Dining at Is Arenas is delightful as the emphasis is on fresh local produce. As one can imagine being located on the coast, fresh fish and seafood is a staple component on the menu. Add to this some Sardinian specialities like the Malloreddus, a pasta dish with a beef and tomato sauce and the very ‘moreish’ pane carasau, a very popular bread which is extremely thin and roasts in the oven for a manner of minutes with olive oil, salt and rosemary. Wash this all down with an abundance of Sardinian wine followed by a shot of the local speciality Mirto, a liquer made from the myrtle plant mixing the berries and leaves to produce a delicately sweet after-dinner shot.

Travelling there couldn’t be easier - there are two international airports, Cagliari and Olbia, which both operate flights from the U.K. although Cagliari is the most convenient being just an hour’s transfer.

The venue is still relatively new yet it already oozes with class and the golf course feels like it has been there an eternity. The golf course is considered one of the best golf courses in Italy and should by no means be underestimated as it is a beast of a course, just waiting to punish any wayward golfers. The venue is a haven of peace and you would be hard pressed to find somewhere more stereotypically Sardinian so treat yourself and visit the Golf Hotel Is Arenas. has some fantastic packages available at Is Arenas. 3 nights’ half board with 3 rounds of golf is available in October for just £329, a saving of £180.
