They say: Compression Advisory offer a range of bespoke VR (Venous Return) socks that are particularly good for golfers. Medically proven and tested, VR golf socks are good for enhancing performance for golf by supporting the muscles (through the gctech compression element) and keeping them oxygenated which helps to prevent the build-up of lactic acid and therefore sore muscles the next day. They are virtually bespoke as three different measurements are taken of the leg to ensure the correct compression profile.

Additional benefits of the socks include helping to prevent swollen feet and legs on long haul flights as well as the associated risk of DVT which can be fatal. And women are unfortunately often more at risk of swelling or DVT from varicose veins, the contraceptive pill, if they are pregnant or have recently given birth.

I say: As a pregnant lady, keen to keep on golfing, the one thing I've been concerned about is getting swollen ankles and feet inside my golf shoes in this very hot weather.

I'd met with an innovative company called Compression Advisory at the PGA Championship at Wentworth GC earlier this year and chatted with Supermodel and keen golfer Jodie Kidd who was wearing the socks. She has suffered with swollen legs through her arduous work on the catwalk and I was keen to put them to the test myself.

Now to start with, let's be straight, these are not a pair of socks to wear as a fashion statement, in fact you'll pretty much look like an old man sporting a pair of plus four trousers if you put them on with your golf shorts, skort or cut-offs, but hidden beneath a lightweight pair of summer golf trousers no-one will be the wiser.

By ordering the correct size for my leg measurements the fit was absolutely perfect and although they initially felt very tight to stretch on, once on they were very comfortable. I thought my legs would feel hot and sweaty squeezed into a knee length sock, but in fact the VR socks were very comfortable to wear. After 18 holes my legs were fresh and not swollen and my feet less achy than I've been used to. I'm also a lot happier planning a flight abroad knowing I'll be able to wear these socks on the plane. At just over £20 a pair I think they are a great investment for all golfers.
