Mayor’s Charity Golf Day celebrates 20 years at Ipswich Golf Club

May 23, 2014

More than 60 golfers turned out in force recently to help raise in excess of £1,600 for local charities at the 20th staging of the Mayor's Golf Day at Ipswich Golf Club.

Since its inception in 1994, by the then Mayoress Pam Grimwood, this event has been staged at Ipswich Golf Club and has raised more than £40,000 to assist numerous local charities in their vital work, and this year's event was no different.

Hamil Clarke MBE, Mayor of Ipswich, said: "It was a great day and everyone enjoyed it despite the less than clement weather. The Purdis Heath Course was, as ever, in fantastic condition and the staff treated us royally, so I would like to thank everyone at Ipswich Golf Club for their warm welcome. I would also like to thank the sponsors who helped us to raise so much money for my charities."

Those charities to benefit from these valuable funds include East Anglia's Children's Hospices,

The Dame Vera Lynn Trust and Fresh Start - New Beginnings.

There was, of course, a competitive element to the day with the Purdis Players team of Ipswich GC Captain Paul Clouting, President Colin Firmin, Vice Captain Barrie Henderson and General Manager Neill Ellice, making the most of home advantage to take first prize.

A special presentation was also made to Paul Clouting by Pam Grimwood, who handed over a mounted silver spoon in recognition of the club's 20 years of hosting the event.

Neill Ellice, Ipswich Golf Club General Manager, said: "It has been a pleasure to host this important day in the Mayor's calendar for the last two decades. Each year everyone comes together for a fantastic day of golf and to continually raise tremendous amounts of money for extremely worthwhile causes.

"We pride ourselves on welcoming visitors to our club for golf days like this, ensuring everyone is looked after and has everything they need to enjoy their day. The fact that we have now staged 20 years of Mayor's Charity Golf Days is testament to the hard work and professionalism shown by the team."
