Double century for Kent club

January 30, 2014

Nevill Golf Club in Tunbridge Wells, on the border between Kent and Sussex and one of the premier golf courses in South-East England, was formed on the eve of the Great War in 1914.

In 2014 the Nevill celebrates its Centenary. It has drawn up a programme of activities to mark the passage of its first 100 years and invites news and sports writers to join it in bringing the celebrations to a wider audience.

To add to the celebrations, member Molly Hodgson turns 100 on December 11th , 2013, bringing up a double-century for the Kent golf club.

Molly last played in 2009, when she was 95, but is insistent that she should get back out onto her home course on the Kent/Sussex border.

"I must start and play again. I might make it my New Year's Resolution," she said.

Reminiscing about her long golfing career, she said: "I used to go to Holland and Ireland a lot. I think I won the Dutch Open many many years ago, when I was but a girl. Those were the days, I've had a lot of pleasure out of golf and travelled to a lot of countries. I've played in Malaya, Hong Kong, Holland, Ireland."

Ladies captain at the Nevill Golf Club, Jo Hamer, reminded Molly that the former club professional at the Nevill used to say that Molly's swing was the best in the club.

Jokingly, Molly replied: "Did he? That's very nice of him, he never told me that!"

The year gets underway with the Captain's Drive-In and flag-raising, marking the dawn of the Centenary Year. Resplendent in Edwardian dress, Men's Captain John Oliver and Ladies' Captain Jo Hamer will drive off at the Nevill on Sunday January 12, 2014.

Club President, Christopher Nevill, the 6th Marquess of Abergavenny, will attend. All media are invited. The day will feature a 9-hole 4-ball competition. Local MPs Greg Clark and Charles Hendry plus celebrities are also expected to attend.
