Kevin Kisner played a 5-under par 66 in the opening round of the Open at Carnoustie on Thursday to take the lead as others struggled to deal with the course.

Kevin Kisner played a 5-under par 66 in the opening round of the Open at Carnoustie on Thursday to take the lead as others struggled to deal with the course.

"Going forward, you never know what you're going to have in Scotland. I know the rain is coming in tomorrow," said Kisner.

He played an eagle and four birdies, making the most of the perfect weather.

Tony Finau, Erik van Rooyen and Zander Lombard all played 67 and share second place.

Brandon Stone, who won last week's Aberdeen Standard Investments Scottish Open, is tied in fifth with Ryan Moore and Brendan Steele after shooting 68s.

Rory McIlroy shot a 69 and is tied in eighth place with nine other players. He played an aggressive game all day and dropped just one shot at the fifth.

"I got away with some tee shots, but at the same time, I think that's what I have to do. That's my game plan this week. I'm convinced that that's the way that I should play it. It's not going to be for everyone, but it worked out pretty well today," said McIlroy, hoping for a major win after four years.

Tiger Woods shot an opening round 71 having reached the turn in 2-under but a neck issue led to dropped shots on the back nine.

"I got off to a great start. I birdied one and birdied four, and I was right there," he said. "I had an 8-iron to six and was looking like I could really do something here. Unfortunately, it didn't quite turn out that way, but part of this afternoon wave, I was one of the lower rounds."

Defending champion Jordan Spieth struggled and finished the day with a 1-over par 72 after he dropped shots at the 16th and 17th then drove into the Barry Burn on the 18th and finished with another bogey.

"It felt like a missed opportunity. I felt like I was really going well," said Spieth. "I think I'm certainly in a recoverable situation. I mean, I imagine this is as easy as the course could play."

World No.1 Dustin Johnson fired a five-over 76 and faces a challenge to make the cut with weather conditions forecast to worsen.

With 600 FedExCup points at stake for the winner this week, seven players can mathematically move to No. 1 in the FedExCup standings, supplanting Dustin Johnson: Justin Thomas (27 points behind); Bubba Watson (159); Justin Rose (270); Jason Day (410); Bryson DeChambeau (435); Patrick Reed (522); and Phil Mickelson (545).
