American trio Jordan Spieth, Xander Schauffele and Kevin Kisner are tied for the lead after a thrilling third round at the British Open on Saturday.

Reigning champion Spieth boosted his chances of retaining the Claret Jug with a six-under-par 65 to move to nine-under overall at Carnoustie.

"I've made a lot of progress over the year that's been kind of an off year, a building year," said Spieth "I feel like my game's in good shape. It's progressed nicely. We've got pretty much a new tournament tomorrow (Sunday)." .

But Schauffele, who at 24 is the same age as Spieth, joined his compatriot at the top of the leaderboard thanks to a 67 that featured six birdies. Should he win he would become the eighth PGA Tour Rookie of the Year to claim an Open Championship.

Meanwhile, Kisner, who had shared the lead at the halfway stage along with Zach Johnson, remains right in contention after a bogey-free round of 68.

"Judging by the conditions and what's going to be going on, I would imagine it's going to be more of a grind all day," said Kisner.

The leaders are two shots clear of another American, Kevin Chappell, who is seven-under after a 67 playing with Spieth.

Behind him, Francesco Molinari of Italy is six-under, while Tiger Woods is five-under after a 66 as he searches for his first major title in a decade.

"It's been a few years since I've felt like this," said Woods. "I played pretty similar to this at the Players Championship. Obviously, the 'fifth major', possibly, but not like this in one of these big four events."

The group on five-under also includes Johnson and Rory McIlroy, as well as England's Tommy Fleetwood.

"The wind is supposed to pick up, so that might be a helping hand," said Fleetwood.

The oldest player in the field at 60, Bernhard Langer posted 3-under 68, including an eagle 3 at No. 14, to sit T36 at 1-under. It marks his lowest round in a major championship since 68/R1/2005 PGA Championship.
