Thailand Classic 2016

Round 4 - Scott Hend claims narrow victory

March 13, 2016

Scott Hend continued Australia's impressive run on the European Tour this season by holding off the course record charge of home hope Piya Swangarunporn to win the True Thailand Classic on Sunday.

The 42-year-old Queenslander birdied his 17th hole and went on to sign for a four-under-par 68 and 18-under total to edge Piya by one-shot after the unheralded Thai, ranked 798th in the world, threatened an unlikely victory with a blistering 63.

Piya had already made six birdies and an eagle when he rolled in a tricky 15-foot to pick up another shot on the final green and snatch the lead for the first time, drawing a flurry of fist pumps and cheers from the crowd.

But overnight leader Hend quickly responded, rolling in a birdie two on the 14th at Black Mountain Golf Club in Hua Hin where he was runner-up a year ago.

The big hitting Australian, whose previous European Tour win came at the 2014 Hong Kong Open, then drove the green with his tee shot at the 330 meter par-four 17th and walked away with a key birdie after a solid short putt to go ahead for good.

More power hitting saw him find the green in two at the par five last as he took three putts to close out victory at the $1.75 million event and become the fifth different Australian winner in 13 European Tour events this season.

Belgium's Thomas Pieters (68) finished third on 15-under, with American Peter Uihlein (70) fourth and Swede Pelle Edberg (70) fifth at the event co-sanctioned with the Asian Tour.

Round 3 - Scott Hend moves two shots clear

March 13, 2016

Scott Hend of Australia shot a 70 to retain the lead after the third round of the Thailand Classic on the par-72 Black Mountain Golf Course.

The 43-year-old Hend produced five birdies for a three day total of 14 under-par 202 to take a two-shot advantage Saturday over Peter Uihlein of the United States.

''I knew it was going to be a tough day, very windy so I'm very pleased,'' said Hend, in search of his eight Asian Tour title. ''It's not very often you get a chance to lead a tournament on a Saturday night, let alone on a Sunday.''

Uihlein, the first-round leader, shot four birdies for a 69 and 12-under-par 204.

Belgium's Thomas Pieters scored the lowest round, a bogey-free 66 for a three-day total of 205 to share third place with Sweden's Pelle Edberg.

Round 2 - Scott Hend & Pelle Edberg share lead

March 12, 2016

Scott Hend took a share of the lead alongside Pelle Edberg by shooting an 8-under 64 Friday in the second round of the Thailand Classic.

The Australian, who was the runner-up last year, is tied with Edberg at 12-under 132 overall. He had six birdies and an eagle at the Black Mountain Golf Course

''It's good to get into position once again for the weekend,'' Hend said. ''We'll see what happens.''

Edberg (67) carded seven birdies and two bogeys.

Panuphol Pittayarat (65) was a stroke behind in third, while first-round leader Peter Uihlein (71) is three shots off the lead.

Defending champion Andrew Dodt shot a second straight 73, failing to the make the cut at 142.

Round 1 - Peter Uihlein tops first day leaderboard

March 11, 2016

Peter Uihlein hit nine birdies and a bogey in an 8-under 64 to take a one-stroke lead over Pelle Edberg on Thursday in the first round of the Thailand Classic.

The American started his round on the 10th hole with two straight birdies before losing a stroke on the 12th. He went on to card seven more birdies at the Black Mountain Golf Course.

''Hit some good wedges, some good iron shots. It was good,'' Uihlein said. ''I birdied the first two holes and then duck-hooked into the water on the next.''

Edberg also had nine birdies, but a pair of bogeys left the Swede a stroke behind.

Scott Jamieson and Javi Colomo (66) share third place.
