Round 4 - So Yeon Ryu wins Meijer LPGA Classic

June 17, 2018

So Yeon Ryu found her winning touch at Blythefield Country Club

Ryu won the Meijer LPGA Classic on Sunday, closing with a 5-under 67 for a two-stroke victory over Caroline Masson. The 29-year-old South Korean player has six LPGA Tour victories, winning twice last year.

''I've been working really hard with my coach and my psychologist, trainer, whole my team,'' Ryu said. ''Finally I was able to find the last piece to put everything together, so it's really, really meaningful to me.''

The two-time major champion birdied the par-5 16th and par-4 17th and parred the par-4 18th to finish at 21-under 267.

''I've been really, really struggling. I had a lot of crazy moments,'' Ryu said. ''I had some good rounds, I had some really bad rounds, so I couldn't even really finish top-10 compared to any other season. So, all those reasons just drove me crazy.''

Two strokes behind Anna Nordqvist and Lee-Anne Pace entering the round, Ryu had six birdies and bogey in the final round.

''I was really calm today,'' said Ryu, set to open her NW Arkansas Championship title defense Friday. ''Of course I prayed like thousand times, but I was really calm. I was able to focus on my game instead of think about other players.''

Masson closed with a 70-foot birdie putt for a 68.

''Super happy about the finish today. Second place is great,'' Masson said. ''I was trying to win it today, but it just wasn't quite enough. I think I made a couple good putts and I missed a few very makeable ones, too, so I guess you just have to make those if you really want to win.''

Lydia Ko shot a 67 to finish third at 18 under.

''I don't remember this course being this easy and I don't think it was easy, but it just shows the amount of talent that's on our tour,'' Ko said, ''It's just good to have a great week. This is a tournament I really love playing.''

Nordqvist and Pace each shot 73 - after each had a 64 on Saturday - to tie for fourth at 17 under with Jacqui Concolino (66), Azahara Munoz (68) and Angela Stanford (70).

U.S. Women's Open winner Ariya Jutanugarn shot a tournament-record 62. She birdied five of the first seven holes, eagled No. 8 and added three more birdies to finish 12th at 15 under.

''I just like really want to go out and have fun, especially play with like Emily (Tubert) like one of my best friends,'' Jutanugarn said. ''And have so much fun today.''

Round 3 - Bogey-free Pace & Nordqvist take Meijer lead

June 16, 2018

Lee-Anne Pace and Anna Nordqvist shot almost identical bogey-free 64s on Saturday to share the 54-hole lead at the LPGA Tour's Meijer Classic.

South Africa's Pace and Nordqvist, of Sweden, started the third round with four birdies in the first five holes then closed with birdies on 18. Pace did one better on the final hole as her birdie came from off the green to finish as the co-leader at 18-under 198.

Nordqvist, 31, will go for her ninth career win on Sunday at the Blythefield Country Club in Grand Rapids, Michigan, while Pace is aiming for her second career victory.

"I love this golf course, it reminds me a lot of home, I feel so comfortable on the course," said Pace, who was born in Paarl, 65 kilometres (40 miles) northeast of Cape Town.

"I'm hitting my irons really well. I've been striking the ball really well. I changed clubs earlier in the year and I'm feeling well."

Second round leader Ryu So-yeon of South Korea is just two shots back and alone in third after shooting a three-under 69

Pace and Nordqvist finished with eight birdies each, by going toe-to-toe on the back nine.

The 37-year-old Pace's only other victory on the US Tour was four years ago at the Blue Bay tournament. She has a half dozen career top 10 finishes on her resume.

She is primed for by far her best result of the season, which is currently tied for 39th at the Kia Classic.

Nordqvist earned her seventh birdie of the round on the par-five 16th to take the outright lead. On 18, she rolled in a 20-foot putt and celebrated with a fist pump.

"It feels good playing good golf, it has been a couple solid days here," said Nordqvist. "When you struggle this year and you know what bad golf feels like, I'm just happy to feel more like myself and hitting better shots."

Nordqvist has made just one bogey through the first three rounds and hit all 18 greens in regulation on Saturday. Pace has made just a trio of bogeys all week.

"I've been in the position before, but I'm just happy to be playing good golf," said Nordqvist.

"I feel like a veteran a little bit, but right now I'm just trying to keep learning, keep getting better every day, and it's been a little bit of a process this year, but pretty happy with how far I have come so far."

Ryu finished birdie-birdie-birdie to move into third place at 16-under while Caroline Masson and Angela Stanford are in a tie for fourth at 15-under.

Round 2 - So Yeon Ryu holds on to Meijer lead

June 15, 2018

So Yeon Ryu birdied all five par-5 holes in a 5-under 67 to take the second-round lead Friday in the Meijer LPGA Classic.

The sixth-ranked South Korean star played her final nine holes - the front nine at Blythefield Country Club - in 5-under 31 to top the leaderboard at 13-under 131. She rallied after making three bogeys in a five-hole stretch on her first nine.

''I really like with my putting stroke right now,'' Ryu said. ''No matter I made it or not, I feel like my stroke is really great and my rhythm's really great. I really want to keep this tempo and rhythm. And I just need to keep working on some tee shots.''

Sandra Gal and Sakura Yokomine each shot 64 to reach 12 under. Caroline Masson (66) was 11 under, and Lee-Anne Pace (67), Anna Nordqvist (68) and Su Oh (68) followed at 10 under.

Ryu is winless this season after taking the major ANA Inspiration and Walmart NW Arkansas Championship last year. She has five LPGA Tour victories, the first in the 2011 U.S. Women's Open.

''I would say more motivated to playing well,'' Ryu said. ''When you're on the golf course you feel a little bit of everything, like anxious, happiness, sadness, angry, just everything. But the thing is, you know, is not bad to feel everything. Also, is just totally normal to feel anxious at the golf course as well. But hopefully I can just manage all my emotions on the golf course.''

Gal and Yokomine each had eight birdies in bogey-free rounds.

''It's just validation of a lot of hard work and the hours I've put into the last few months,'' the German player said. ''It's nice to see when you're making the birdies, you see your name at the top. It's fun, you're in contention for the weekend. It's great.''

Kelly Shon, tied with Ryu for the first-round lead after a 64, was four shots back at 9 under after a 71. Michelle Wie and Lydia Ko were 8 under, each shooting 67.

''You have to hit in the fairways here,'' Wie said. ''The rough can be a little penalizing.''

Lexi Thompson, the 2015 winner, had a 70 to get to 6 under.

Ariya Jutanugarn, making her first start since winning the U.S. Women's Open, had a 70 to join sister Moria Jutanugarn (69) and defending champion Brooke Henderson (70) at 5 under.

''Unfortunately, I'm not playing great golf right now,'' Henderson said. ''I definitely have a great game plan for this course. It worked really well last year and I just kind of have to get back to it. Just making some dumb mental mistakes.''

Annie Park, the ShopRite LPGA Classic winner last week in New Jersey for her first tour title, missed the cut with rounds of 76 and 69.

The forecast high Saturday was 92, going up to 96 on Sunday.

''I don't mind the hot weather. I actually hate cold weather,'' Ryu said. ''We play with a lot of hot weather. Also, it's not going to be hotter than Thailand or Singapore, so I'm cool with it.''

Round 1 - So-yeon Ryu and Kelly Shon tied in Meijer Classic

June 14, 2018

Sixth-ranked So-yeon Ryu of South Korea fired a bogey-free eight-under par 64 on Thursday to share the first-round lead with American Kelly Shon at the LPGA Meijer Classic.

Ryu, whose lone top-five showing of the season was a share of fourth at Los Angeles, seeks her sixth LPGA title in the Grand Rapids, Michigan, event and her first since winning last June's Northwest Arkansas Championship, which lifted her to world number one.

"This season, I'm not really fully satisfied with it, so hopefully this week it's going to start playing really well and hopefully I can win this tournament," Ryu said.

After starting with back-to-back birdies, Ryu ran off three in a row at the par-three sixth, par-four seventh and par-five eighth holes and added another at the par-five 11th before another set of back-to-back birdies at the par-five 16th at par-four 17th.

It was her low round of the season and her lowest since a 61 during her Arkansas triumph last year.

"I've been working really hard with my coach and we've been really focused on speed control on the greens," Ryu said. "It finally paid off today."

South Korean-born Shon, seeking her first LPGA crown, has missed the cut in six of her 11 prior tour starts this season, with her best result a share of 42nd in Los Angeles.

"I'm doing so many things so well that it's so hard to believe I'm getting what I'm getting," Shon said of her season's struggles. "Tough as it is, I've been still keeping my head down, just working as hard as I could doing the same things, and so yeah, to be honest, I have been waiting for a round like this."

Shon, who began on the back nine, birdied the par-three 12th before taking her lone bogey at 13, which she answered with a birdie at 16.

Shon began the front side, her second nine, with a birdie at the par-five first, added two more at the par-three fourth and par-five fifth, then closed the round with birdies sandwiched around an eagle at the eighth to match Ryu for the lead.

Australia's Su Oh, Sweden's Anna Nordqvist, France's Celine Herbin and American Lizette Salas shared third on 66 with South African Lee-Anne Pace and Germans Caroline Masson and Sophia Popov another stroke adrift.

Canada's Brooke Henderson, the defending champion, was in a pack on 69.
