Victor Perez continued his impressive recent run of form as he signed for an eight under par round of 64 to take a share of the lead at the end of round one at the tri-sanctioned Afrasia Bank Mauritius Open at Anahita.

“I've been playing a lot of good golf lately. It's been a really good streak, a little hard to believe in golf when we know how the highs and the lows can be. I'm trying to ride this wave out as long as possible and it showed again in this first round."

The Frenchman graduated from the Challenge Tour in style after winning the Foshan Open last month before coming second at the Ras Al Khaimah Challenge Tour Grand Final in his next event.

He started life on the 2019 Race to Dubai with a tied third place finish in Hong Kong last week and brought his sparkling form to the paradise island of Mauritius, carding nine birdies and a single bogey to sit alongside India's S. Chikkarangappa at the top of the leaderboard at the Four Seasons Golf Club Mauritius at Anahita.

“I don't really know what was going right, I was kind of in the zone. I was just trying to go shot after shot. There were some opportunities out there with no wind on the par fives. I drove the second in two, hitting driver on my second shot gave me a tap in for birdie."

“After missing a short putt for birdie on one, that kept the round going after birdieing 18. I missed that opportunity after the turn on one and the birdie on two really kept it going. Then I was able to birdie three, four and nine to finish which was awesome.”

Jaco Van Zyl of South Africa is joined on seven under par by Kurt Kitayama of the United States and Japan's Masahiro Kawamura after they both carded seven birdies in their bogey-free rounds of 65.

“It's the first round of a new season," said Van Zyl, "so it's really nice to get off to a good solid start. I played nicely and it was a really nice finish. I was going well and then I finished birdie-eagle."

“The early tee time was good. The course is in absolutely fantastic condition considering the amount of rain they had on Monday and Tuesday. The greens are grainy. Coming from South Africa, I think we're very fortunate. We get to play very different golf courses all the time all over the country. I lived on the East Coast of South Africa for a while and the greens are very similar to these. But, as I said, they're absolutely pure.”

Meanwhile, England's Lee Slattery and Justin Harding of South Africa finished their rounds with eagles at the 18th to sit two shots further back on five under par alongside Frenchman Matthieu Pavon, Malcolm Kokocinski of Sweden, Austria's Matthias Schwab and South Africans Oliver Bekker and Alex Haindl.

“I didn't expect much from this week," said Slattery. "It was a tough three weeks, the last three events of the season. I think I probably played to much and put a lot of pressure on myself to do well in those events. There's so much to play for in those big events and they come at the end of the year when you've played so much golf – it's tricky."

“I've had nine days not touching the clubs over the last couple of weeks and it's been really nice, just spending time with the family and not even thinking about golf. To go out today, it felt like I was starting again almost. Really enjoyed it."

"There were a few English supporters in the grandstands at the last and they managed to get the eagle ball. I made two lovely shots there but I played solid all day really. Made one mistake on 17 which cost me a bogey, but I was never really in trouble.”

Jordan Smith of England and American Paul Peterson are then amongst a group of nine players in a tie for 13 th place on four under par.
