“I played solid," said Bjerregaard. "I didn't have to fight for my par too much out there. Got off to a good start. Birdied the first and the third, it was very good. We had an enjoyable day, all four of us, played with some nice guys."

The Dane arrived this week off the back of four consecutive top 20s and maintained that form in fine fashion, moving to nine under on a calmer day on the east coast. High winds had made scoring very difficult on day one but a host of players made the most of friendlier weather on Friday, with Bjerregaard staying bogey-free with an impressive 65 at Kingsbarns Golf Links.

“Completely different. It was tough yesterday. I thought putting was tough. You had to account for the wind. I had a few, that you think there would be a little left-to-right and they were right-to-left because of the wind. I thought St. Andrews, we had wind across every hole. We didn't have one hole downwind or into the wind, and today we had absolutely no wind this morning. It was ideal. It was nice to get off to a fast start because you know around here when there's not much, you have to post a few birdies.”

Not to be outdone, Pavan continued his run of good form following on from his maiden European Tour win in August, as the Italian closed out the day with blemish-free 63 to join Bjerregaard at the top of the leaderboard.

“To be honest I played well yesterday, as well. Just struggled a little bit. It was very tough yesterday with the wind. I didn't put that well yesterday. Today I started off hitting it really close, and I made those birdie putts within five, six feet, and then at the turn, I was hitting my irons well. So yeah, just kept hitting it close and luckily I kept rolling it nicely. It was a very nice round."

“It's great to start playing well like this, and give myself chances. All I can do is keep plugging along and playing well. Right now, the focus is just to get out there tomorrow and just play each shot and to have a good game plan and then we'll see. All you can do is try to play well and be within having a chance on Sunday afternoon. That's all you can do.”

Hatton - the first man to ever successfully defend this title last season – sits a shot behind after an impressive round of 66 at the Championship Course Carnoustie, with Austrian Matthias Schwab and Australian Marcus Fraser putting together rounds of 67 and 68 at the Old Course at St. Andrews to join Hatton at eight under.

“We got Carnoustie on a nice day today, which helps a lot," said Hatton. "This is the toughest out of the three. Especially when it blows, so we're all fortunate to get pretty calm conditions today. Most of the back nine is playing downwind, which is nice. 17 is quite a tough hole today with it being straight into, but very happy with how today went.”

Englishman Ashley Chesters, who fired a 64 at Kingsbarns, sits a further hot back at seven under and was joined late in the day by Finland's Mikko Ilonen, who produced a stunning round of 63 at the Old Course.

Ryder Cup star Tommy Fleetwood continued his solid form at Carnoustie with a round of 67 to sit alongside New Zealander Ryan Fox, Greek Peter Karmis and Englishman Lee Slattery at six under after a trio of 67s at Kingsbarns, just one shot clear of American Tony Finau, Englishman Matt Wallace, Frenchman Alex Levy, Scot Stephen Gallacher, South African Bekker and Italian Edoardo Molinari.
