Austrian Open 2017

Round 4 - Dylan Frittelli claims first tour title

June 12, 2017

Dylan Frittelli shot a 5-under-par 67 on Sunday to win the Lyoness Open for his first European Tour title.

Frittelli, a Challenge Tour graduate from South Africa who turned pro in 2012, finished 12-under for the event, defeating Finland's Mikko Korhonen, England's David Horsey and countryman Jbe Kruger by one stroke.

His first of two Challenge Tour victories was also earned in Austria as he won the Kaernten Golf Open in June 2013.

Frittelli's victory on Sunday happened six weeks after he surrendered a four-stroke lead and lost in a playoff to France's Alexander Levy. He also lost in a playoff at the Australian PGA Championship in 2015.

Grouped with Chile's Felipe Aguilar, the overnight leader, Frittelli picked up three shots on the first four holes. He finished with six holes and just one bogey when he carded a 4 on the par-3 14th hole.

Aguilar, who held a two-stroke lead through the first three rounds, hit a 3-over 75 and was among five players tied for 10th - a group that also included last year's winner, China's Wu Ashun.

Round 3 - Felipe Aguilar maintains advantage

June 11, 2017

Chilean golfer Felipe Aguilar retained a two-stroke lead after the third round of the Lyoness Open on Saturday.

Leading from the opening day, the 399th-ranked Aguilar is chasing his third European Tour title after winning the Indonesia Open in 2008 and The Championship at Laguna National three years ago.

Aguilar had a three-stroke advantage but dropped a shot on the 18th for his fourth bogey of the round to finish level par. He remained 9 under for the tournament. Johan Carlsson of Sweden, Dylan Frittelli of South Africa and Sepp Straka of Austria followed on 7 under each.

''Today I left many shots on the course. It could have been a little bit better,'' said Aguilar, who missed the cut in six of his 11 events and has not had a top-40 finish this year.

A group of four players, who were one stroke further back, included Mikko Korhonen of Finland. Korhonen had a 66 with seven birdies for the lowest score of the day.

Graeme Storm, who was Aguilar's closest challenger going into the third round, carded a 3-over 75, which included a double bogey on the par-4 No. 7. The Englishman dropped to 10th at 4 under.

Round 2 - Felipe Aguilar maintains lead

June 10, 2017

Chilean golfer Felipe Aguilar followed up his strong start with a 2-under 70 Friday to retain a two-stroke lead after the second round of the Lyoness Open.

After a 65 in the opening round, Aguilar carded four birdies and dropped two strokes as he went 9-under for the tournament.

Graeme Storm of England shot a 69 to stay within two strokes of Aguilar, while Sweden's Johan Carlsson and England's Oliver Fisher were another stroke behind in third.

David Horsey, who had a 75 in the opening round, matched the course record with a flawless 8-under 64. The Englishman joined a group of four at 5-under 139, which included 2012 winner Bernd Wiesberger. The Austrian, the highest-ranked player in the field at 29th, completed his round with two straight birdies.

Round 1 - Felipe Aguilar opens two shot lead

June 9, 2017

Felipe Aguilar hit top form at the Austrian Open on Thursday with a seven-under-par 65 giving the Chilean a two-shot lead after day one.

The world number 399's best effort since the Joburg Open in January 2016 took him clear of the chasing pack at the Diamond Country Club in Atzenbrugg outside Vienna.

South Africa's Jaco van Zyl, Sweden's Johan Carlsson and England's Ashley Chesters are in joint second with two other Englishmen, Graeme Storm and Oliver Wilson, a further shot behind in a tie for fifth with France's Joel Stalter.

"The way I started playing golf today is always a good sign," Aguilar told europeantour.com.

"But it's a long tournament, there are some really good players this week and the course is in great condition so you've got to keep the good work up."

The 42-year-old has not won a tournament since 2014, but laid the groundwork for his early lead by racing to five under on the front nine.

Van Zyl, still searching for his maiden European Tour victory after five runners-up finishes, carded two birdies on the front nine and three after the turn.

Home favourite and 2012 champion Bernd Wiesberger suffered from a loss of focus having taken a share of the early lead.

A run of five birdies in six holes from the 15th, having started on the back nine, was ruined by a lost ball off the tee at the fourth and a double-bogey on the eighth after a poor greenside bunker shot saw the Austrian, one of only two players inn the world's top 100 in the field, finish two under.
