Former Masters Champion Willett provided one of the moments of the day when he pulled off a miraculous recovery, reminiscent of the great Seve Ballesteros, at the 15th hole having driven his ball into the trees.

โ€œIt was good fun โ€“ there were a few up-and-downs, but crowds are great. Me and Jon played some good golf. We're in for another good day tomorrow.

โ€œWe've got a three-shot lead over third, so we are just going to go play some good golf, try and have a bit of fun and see where we are at. The weather is not supposed to be as good tomorrow and you have other elements and factors in there so I'll go back and rest up.โ€

He went on to card only his second bogey of the day, but recovered that stroke with a birdie on the last hole for a round of 68 to remain in a tie for the lead with Spaniard Rahm on 15 under par.

The pair will tee off together at 1:20pm on Sunday, with Rahm chasing a fourth Rolex Series title and Willett targeting a second.

Rahm had edged two shots clear on the back nine with a birdie on the 16th hole โ€“ his sixth of the day โ€“ but he dropped a shot on the 17th and scrambled a par on the last to also sign for a round of 68.

โ€œI was happy I made par on 18. It's a nice finish that way. Besides basically the last seven strokes, the rest of the round was almost bulletproof. I played really good golf. I had a good plan going in and if I had finished properly with even two pars, I would have a one-shot lead.

โ€œBut still, there's a lot of golf to come. It's a tricky golf course and we have 18 holes tomorrow with Danny being tied with me, both playing solid, and the guys behind us only three shots back. It's going to be a tough day. We're going to have to play really good golf to win this event and I hope I can live up to it.โ€

The pair are three shots clear of the chasing back led by World Number Four Rose, who had an up-and-down round of 69 on the West Course, including an eagle three at the 17th which was followed by a bogey six at the last. Rose is on 12 under par in a share of third place alongside South African Christian Bezuidenhout โ€“ who also signed for a 69 โ€“ and India's Shubhankar Sharma, who posted a six under par 66.

โ€œIt was frustrating way to finish," said Rose. "But I'm in with a shot tomorrow. Would have loved to have been one better, two better, possibly. But hey, there's going to be three guys walking off in a minute thinking the same thing, so it doesn't matter.โ€
