Matthew Fitzpatrick made a safe par 4 on the third extra hole to win the European Masters on Sunday, after firing a 6-under 64 to force a playoff.
The 48th-ranked Englishman sank his putt from less than three feet while Scott Hend of Australia made a ragged bogey at the 18th hole on the scenic Swiss Alps course.
Fitzpatrick earned a 450,000-euro ($542,000) prize for his first win since the season-ending World Tour Championship in Dubai last November.
It was a fourth career title for the 23-year-old former U.S. Amateur winner.
Hend again pocketed 300,000 euros ($361,000) for losing the title in a playoff for the second straight year.
Both carded 14-under totals of 266 having had early starts Sunday to complete their delayed third rounds. On Saturday, play was suspended because of fog, while fading light brought the leading groups in early.
Englishman Tyrrell Hatton (66) and Paraguay's Fabrizio Zanotti (68) finished three back on 11 under in a tie for third place.
A playoff was needed because Fitzpatrick and third-round leader Hend (68) both missed mid-range birdie chances on the 18th in regulation.
Hend also missed from five feet for victory on the 18th green in the second playoff hole.
Fitzpatrick, a Ryder Cup debutant last year, said he thought Hend would seize that chance after his own 12-feet (4-meter) birdie putt slid by the hole.
''It's never nice to see,'' Fitzpatrick said of Hend's miss, ''but we kept our nerve and we played really smart all week.''
Hend acknowledged that ''I had the opportunity and I didn't take it. Fitzpatrick played great to win. He's a good champion.''
A long day for Fitzpatrick began with an 8 a.m. tee time for the final three holes of his third round. He bogeyed the 16th and fell four shots behind Hend for his return to the course three hours later.
Fitzpatrick surged after a steady start to the final round, and led by two shots when he birdied the par-3 16th. That made it seven birdies in an 11-hole stretch.
The lead was gone minutes later when Fitzpatrick bogeyed the par-4 17th, after finding a green-side bunker with his approach, and Hend birdied the par-5 15th.
Defending champion Alex Noren of Sweden was tied for sixth place on 9 under after a 66. Lee Westwood, the 1999 winner at the Crans-sur-Sierre club that is blanketed with snow each winter, finished on level par after a closing 69.

Scott Hend of Australia extended his lead to two strokes when play was suspended during the weather-affected European Masters third round on Saturday.
Hend birdied the par-3 13th hole minutes before fading light forced the players off a second time. Earlier, fog shrouding the Swiss Alps course caused a two-hour, 24-minute stoppage.
Leading overnight by one shot, Hend was 2 over par for his 13 holes. Still, his 11 under total was two ahead of Matt Fitzpatrick of England, Fabrizio Zanotti of Paraguay, and Darren Fichardt of South Africa.
The four leading players were due back on course at 8 a.m. on Sunday to finish the third round.
The clubhouse leaders at 8 under were Marcus Fraser of Australia, Lucas Bjerregaard of Denmark and Dean Burmester of South Africa.

Scott Hend of Australia shot a 7-under 63 on Friday to follow his opening 64 and led the European Masters by one stroke after the second round.
Hend had an eagle and five birdies, four from the 14th hole onward, to lead South African Darren Fichardt whose 63 left him alone at 12 under.
Three shots further back were Thongchai Jaidee of Thailand, Fabrizio Zanotti of Paraguay, and Todd Sinnott of Australia.
A three-player group on 8-under included European Ryder Cup player Matt Fitzpatrick of England and American Julian Suri, who both shot 65.
The lowest score on a sunny day in the Swiss Alps was a 62 by Englishman Lee Slattery, 13 shots better than his opening round.
Tommy Fleetwood, the European Tour leader, missed the cut at 2-over after a par-70 round on the scenic course at Crans-sur-Sierre club.
Danny Willett, the 2016 Masters champion, was further adrift at 8-over. The Englishman, who won here in 2015, shot a 72.
Hend was runner-up in this event last year when losing in a playoff to Alex Noren of Sweden, the world No. 12 who is the highest-ranked player in the tournament.
Noren was on 3-under after a 67 Friday, alongside overnight co-leader Miguel Angel Jimenez. The 53-year-old Spaniard shot a 73 to follow his opening 64 and was in a tie for 32nd place.
Lee Westwood also shot 67 to stand at 2-under, 11 shots behind the 98th-ranked Hend.

Miguel Angel Jimenez fired a 6-under round of 64 to be in a three-way tie for the lead after the European Masters first round on Thursday.
Aged 53, Jimenez had seven birdies and a single bogey on the picturesque Swiss Alps course to share the top of the leaderboard with 30th-ranked Tyrrell Hatton of England and Scott Hend of Australia.
Jimenez also competes on the senior tour and already holds the European Tour record as the oldest winner. At 50, his 2014 Spanish Open title was his 21st on the tour.
Six players were one shot behind the leaders, including Thongchai Jaidee of Thailand. The European Masters is also an Asian Tour event.
Among five players on 4 under was American golfer Daniel Im, who aced the 175-yard (160-meter) eighth hole with a seven iron.
Two-time European Masters champion Alex Noren of Sweden opened his title defense with a level-par round.
In his 500th start on the European Tour, Lee Westwood of England carded a 1-over 71.
