Round 4 - Matt Wallace wins playoff for Indian Open

March 11, 2018

Matt Wallace birdied the first playoff hole against fellow Englishman Andrew ''Beef'' Johnston to win the Indian Open on Sunday.

Wallace went for the green in two on the playoff hole, the 18th, needing only 20 feet for an eagle. Johnston laid up and had a longer putt for birdie, which he missed, and Wallace won when he tapped in from a foot.

''Since being 3-over through 8 in my first round, I've played some off my best golf,'' Wallace said.

Johnston shot a final-round 66, Wallace a 68. They finished with 11-under totals of 277 at the DLF Golf and Country Club.

Sihwan Kim of the U.S. finished third after a 68, three strokes behind.

Hometown favorite Shubhankar Sharma faded on the back nine with a 75 to finish seven shots behind.

Sharma and Wallace shared the lead after the third round. But Sharma bogeyed two of three holes on the back nine, including a double-bogey 7 after an out-of-bounds tee shot on the 15th, to end his chances of winning his third European Tour event of the season.

Sharma already had a victory of sorts this week: He received a special invitation to play in the Masters at Augusta.

The 21-year-old Sharma held the 54-hole lead in his first World Golf Championship appearance last week, in Mexico. He finished tied for ninth after a closing 74. He was ranked No. 462 in the world three months ago when he shot 61 in the second round and won the Joburg Open.

He closed with a 62 last month to win the Malaysian Open, making him the only two-time winner on the European Tour this season.

Round 3 - Sharma & Wallace tied for lead in New Delhi

March 10, 2018

Home favorite Shubhankar Sharma shared the lead with Matt Wallace of England at the Indian Open after the third round on Saturday.

Sharma, who four days ago received a special invitation to play in the Masters at Augusta, shot level-par 72 with five birdies, three bogeys and a double bogey. He and Wallace, who also had a mixed round with four birdies and four bogeys in a 70, are on 7-under 209 overall. The Englishman eagled the par-4 No. 9.

Stephen Gallacher of Scotland had the best round of the day - a 67 - to rise 22 places to third, one stroke behind.

Emiliano Grillo had a four-stroke overnight lead but the Argentine shot a 78 and is tied for fourth with Matthias Schwab (68) and Andrew Johnston (73).

Sharma held the 54-hole lead in his first World Golf Championship appearance last week, in Mexico. He finished tied for ninth after a closing 74. He was at No. 462 in the world three months ago when he shot 61 in the second round and won the Joburg Open.

He closed with a 62 last month to win the Malaysian Open, making him the only two-time winner on the European Tour this season.

Round 2 - Emiliano Grillo takes solo lead, Sharma 4 behind

March 09, 2018

India's young golfing sensation Shubhankar Sharma on Friday fired a course record of eight-under 64 to stay within touching distance of clubhouse leader Emiliano Grillo on the second day of the Indian Open.

Argentina's Grillo, who scored four-under 68 after his course-record equalling 65 in the opening round at the DLF Golf and Country Club in Gurgaon, remains top of the leaderboard.

21-year-old Sharma said he was pleased with his performance on Friday, which leaves him four shots off the lead in sole second place at seven-under for the tournament.

"This is a tough course and it is not easy to go low here. I am very happy with the way I played," he said in a statement.

"Today's round will definitely rank up there as one of my most significant achievements, especially when it is played at this course," Sharma added.

Home favourite Sharma had an ordinary start on Thursday after shooting one-over at the Gurgaon course, considered among the toughest on the Asian and European tour.

"If you told me I would be seven-under-par going into the weekend after being five-over-par on my opening nine holes yesterday, I would just have laughed," he said.

Sharma has shot up the world golf rankings after a stellar few months, with wins at the European Tour's Joburg Open in December and Maybank Championship this February, and a strong showing at the WGC-Mexico Championships last weekend.

Spain's Pablo Larrazabal scored a one-under 71 and was tied for third spot with English golfer Andrew Johnston, who hit six-under 66 for a total of 138.

Nine of the total 144 golfers were not able to finish their second round on Friday because of fading light.

Round 1 - Larrazabal tied for lead with Grillo

March 08, 2018

Pablo Larrazabal awoke with a start, just 38 minutes before his tee-off time in the first round of the Indian Open.

He had a ''10-second shower,'' a wild car ride through the streets of Delhi, and hit just 10 balls on the range before dashing to his first hole, the 10th. The disrupted preparation didn't seem to affect him.

With adrenaline pumping through his body, the Spanish golfer made nine birdies along with two bogeys and a double to shoot 5-under 67 on Thursday.

Larrazabal was tied for second place with Paul Peterson and Matteo Manassero, two shots behind leader Emiliano Grillo.

Larrazabal said his phone reverted to Spanish time overnight, meaning his alarm didn't go off, and he needed a wake-up call by a European Tour official.

''Waking up this morning, I didn't think I was going to make it,'' Larrazabal said. ''Delhi's traffic is quite tough. I got lucky that we didn't have traffic.''

Searching for his first European Tour victory, Grillo started and finished his round with birdies and had six more in between at the tough DLF Golf and Country Club.

Two days after receiving a special invitation to play in the Masters at Augusta, Shubhankar Sharma had wildly contrasting nines but recovered for a 1-over 73 on his home course.

Starting on the back nine, Sharma shot 41 with three bogeys and a double bogey. But he came back on his final nine to shoot 32, with four birdies.

Sharma held the 54-hole lead in his first World Golf Championship appearance last week, in Mexico. He finished tied for ninth after a closing 74.

Sharma was at No. 462 in the world three months ago when he shot 61 in the second round and won the Joburg Open. He closed with a 62 last month to win the Malaysian Open, making him the only two-time winner on the European Tour this season.

The first round was suspended because of bad light, with 24 players still to finish. Two were on 5 under: Adrien Saddier (after 17 holes) and Keith Horne (after 16 holes).
