“It was a pretty good day," said Pieters. "We played some good golf and managed to not make many mistakes which is what you have to do in fourballs as you know a lot of guys are goimg to make a lot of birdies. Thankfully we managed to make a lot too and it's nice to have a five shot lead going into the final round. We need to keep playing the same way and we will have a great chance.”

The young duo, who are looking to take the iconic World Cup trophy back to Belgium for the first time in the tournament's 65-year history, entered day three at the Metropolitan Golf Club in a share of the lead, but a Detry eagle on the ninth put them two ahead and they powered clear of the rest of the field on the back nine.

“It would mean a lot to win this trophy," according to Detry." Walking up that first tee, when you see the trophy, it's just unbelievable. You see all those names on there, you see pretty much all the countries and all the players that have won this tournament. It's pretty amazing. Having our name on the board and on the trophy and bringing it back to Belgium would be very cool.”

Detry and Pieters were bogey-free in signing for a 63 in the opening fourballs and they repeated the trick in round three, sandwiching one of just four under-par rounds in the foursomes on day two to get to 19 under.

The Italian team of Andrea Pavan and Renato Paratore were at 14 under alongside Korean pair Byeong-hun An and Si Woo Kim, and Mexican duo Abraham Ancer and Roberto Diaz.

“I feel like the golf course sets up nicely for us in foursomes," said Pavan. "I don't have to hit many tee shots tomorrow and I can just rely on my iron game and hopefully I can give him a lot of birdie looks. Belgium are playing well obviously. I don't know, I feel like it's going to be tough, but in golf you never know, especially in foursomes.”

England, Sweden and Australia are six shots off the lead heading into the final day foursomes.
