Tiger Woods will take on Rory McIlroy, Hideki Matsuyama and Jason Day in a high-stakes skins game ahead of the inaugural ZOZO Championship in Japan next month.

Each hole is assigned a monetary value and players need to win a hole outright to take a โ€œskinโ€ or the money rolls over to the next hole.

Woods, who lost to Phil Mickelson in their ยฃ7million showdown in Las Vegas last year, said: โ€œI havenโ€™t played a skins format in quite some time, so it will be fun to try something a little different and add a few strategic elements as we compete.

โ€œThere has already been some friendly banter between us and that will continue until we get to the first tee.โ€

McIlroy, who is competing in this weekโ€™s BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth, added: โ€œIโ€™m a huge fan of the skins format. I love the way it rewards attacking play and think it suits my game quite well.

โ€œAny time I can go directly at pins to try and make birdies and eagles, I think it puts me at an advantage. The other fun thing about skins is how you find yourself rooting for the other guys if youโ€™re not in a position to win the hole.

โ€œYouโ€™re hoping they can tie with someone else so you can play for that skin on the next hole. With the skins format, youโ€™re always in it until the end.โ€

The skins game will take place at Accordia Golf Narashino Country Club on October 21. Viewers in the UK and Ireland will be required to subscribe to GOLFTV to watch. Passes start at ยฃ4.99 a month.
