October 15-18
Shadow Creek Golf Course, Las Vegas, Nevada
$9,750,000
Round 1, Round 3, Round 4

Xander Schauffele started his second round in The CJ Cup on the wrong foot with a missed 4-foot birdie putt but quickly put that behind him and produced birdie after birdie, making six in a row for a career-best 29 on the back nine, to close with an 8-under 64 and a three-shot lead over Tyrell Hatton.

โ€œSome of those holes, you're not really trying to birdie them, you're just trying to leave yourself an uphill 35-footer. And fortunately, I made a couple of them. It was a nice stretch. Got a little bit stale there on the other side. Pace of play slowed down a lot, kind of hot, easy to let the mind wander. Upset I didn't make more birdies, but pleased I didn't make any bogeys.โ€

He enters the weekend at 14-under 130 and now holds the course record.

Tyrell Hatton had a tougher second round but closed with two birdies for a 68 to hold on to second place.

The 2019 champion, Justin Thomas, made six birdies for a 66 and is tied in eighth place at 6-under, eight shots behind the leader.

โ€œI guess I played my way somewhat back into it. But Xander kind of went off today, so that makes it a little harder.โ€

Rory McIlroy improved on his first round score with a 69 on Friday. He has been working on his swing for the past two weeks, focusing on positions and found the transition to a competition difficult.

โ€œWhen you're thinking so much about your golf swing and then someone says, โ€˜Well, just forget about it and go play,' it's very hard to do that when for two weeks solid all you've been thinking about is your positions and stuff," said McIlroy. " It just takes time. Sometimes it takes a week to get out of it. But I did a better job of it today.โ€

โ€œIt's going to take something very special to catch up to Xander. But if I play well, I can post a good finish and give myself some confidence going into Sherwood.โ€
