England's Paul Casey was one shot behind a large leading group after a low-scoring first round of the Travelers Championship.

The world number eight was heading for a share of top spot at six under par until a dropped shot at the final hole, where he failed to chip out of an awkward lie in the greenside rough to fall behind Americans Ryan Armour, Bronson Burgoon and Zach Sucher, Mexico's Abraham Ancer, Canadian Mackenzie Hughes and South Korea's Lee Kyoung-hoon.

Armour had two runs of three straight birdies, from the fifth to the seventh hole and the 11th to 13th, and finished with another birdie to cancel out a bogey at the 15th.

Burgoon, Hughes, Sucher and Lee put together bogey-free rounds while Ancer, having started at the 10th, made five of his seven birdies in his second nine.

Keegan Bradley was another notable name alongside Casey at five under, with England's Tommy Fleetwood joining Patrick Cantlay, Marc Leishman and former Open Champion Louis Oosthuizen among those a further shot back.

Phil Mickelson was three under while Padraig Harrington, Justin Thomas, Bryson DeChambeau and Patrick Reed were in a large pack at two under.

Francesco Molinari was one under but Jordan Spieth was three over after a costly eight at the par-five 13th featuring a hack sideways out of the rough, a third shot into the water and a three-putt.
