U.S. Women’s Open R3

Hinako Shibuno holds on to lead in Texas

December 10-13
Cypress Creek & Jackrabbit courses
Champions Golf Club, Houston, Texas
$5,500,000
Round 1, Round 2, Round 4

Overnight leader Hinako Shibuno started her round with a four shot lead but four bogeys on the Cypress Park Course led to her first over-par round of 74 at the U.S. Women’s Open.

Shibuno felt the pressure of playing in the final group and missed the encouragement of the crowd she received when she won the Women’s British Open in 2019.

“Last year when I won the major, there was a large number of people out in front of me and because of the audience, that gave me power and also it’s easy for me to get on a momentum as well,” said Shibuno. However, now there’s no people, no audience and it’s very difficult for me to get on a momentum, because when I get a run of birdies, when I get the birdie, it’s silence.”

She held on to a one shot lead over first round leader Amy Olson who shot even-par 71.

“I’m really pleased with how I played today. It was such a grind,” said Olson. “Pars were a great score on every single hole today. Fortunately made a couple good birdies, especially the one on 17 coming in. Some really solid par putts and that’s really what it comes down to, making those putts whether they’re for birdie or par.”

Moriya Jutanugarn was 2-under through thirteen holes and within two strokes of the lead but dropped a shot at the 14th and double-bogeyed the 17th to card a 1-over 72 and tie for third with Ji Yeong2 Kim.

Teenager Yealimi Noh, who shared the 54-hole lead at the Volunteers of America Classic before finishing tied for second last week, is tied for fifth, four shots off the lead.

Should she win on Sunday she would become the youngest U.S. Women’s Open winner in championship history at 19 years, 4 months and 17 days, a record set by Inbee Park (19 years, 11 months, 17 days) when she won in 2008.

“I didn’t know that. Just hoping to play my best tomorrow and not have any regrets,” said Noh. “I was really excited for this event because it’s my first [U.S. Women’s Open]. Last week definitely gave me a lot of confidence going into this week.”
