{"id":1242632,"date":"2023-03-22T10:36:05","date_gmt":"2023-03-22T10:36:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/golftoday.co.uk\/rory-mcilroy-backs-unpopular-shorter-ball-proposal-with-majors-on-his-mind\/"},"modified":"2023-11-29T18:55:39","modified_gmt":"2023-11-29T18:55:39","slug":"rory-mcilroy-backs-unpopular-shorter-ball-proposal-with-majors-on-his-mind","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/golftoday.co.uk\/rory-mcilroy-backs-unpopular-shorter-ball-proposal-with-majors-on-his-mind\/","title":{"rendered":"Rory McIlroy backs \u2018unpopular\u2019 shorter ball proposal with majors on his mind"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Rory McIlroy has backed the \u201cunpopular\u201d idea of a shorter ball being used in elite competition and may even use it in PGA Tour events when not required.<\/p>\n<p>Golf\u2019s governing bodies said in February 2020 they intended to \u201cbreak the ever-increasing cycle of hitting distance\u201d and last week announced the proposal of a Model Local Rule (MLR) to give tournaments the option to require the use of balls which will travel around 15 yards less.<\/p>\n<p>R&amp;A chief executive Martin Slumbers and USGA counterpart Mike Whan confirmed that the MLR would apply in their own elite events, most notably the Open Championship and US Open, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>The PGA Tour did not immediately back the proposal and it was strongly criticised by top equipment manufacturing company Acushnet and former world number one Justin Thomas, who plays their market-leading Titleist balls.<\/p>\n<p><!-- EMBED START Twitter --><\/p>\n<figure>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"525\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">This proposed Model Local Rule is intended for use only in elite competitions and, if adopted, will have no impact on recreational golf.<\/p>\n<p>Learn more about today's announcement from the USGA and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RandA?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@RandA<\/a> &#x1f447;<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 USGA (@USGA) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/USGA\/status\/1635626976978321408?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 14, 2023<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/figure>\n<p><!-- EMBED END Twitter --><\/p>\n<p>However, with the Masters \u2013 which McIlroy needs to win to complete a career grand slam \u2013 expected to adopt the shorter ball, McIlroy said he could choose to play it in PGA Tour tournaments even if the MLR was not adopted on the US circuit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHonestly, for me the major championships are the biggest deal, so if the PGA Tour doesn\u2019t implement it, I might still play the Model Local Rule ball, because I know that that\u2019ll give me the best chance and the best preparation leading into the major championships,\u201d McIlroy told No Laying Up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd again, this is personal preference and personal opinion at this stage of my career.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know that I\u2019m gonna be defined by the amount of major championships that I hopefully will win from now until the end of my career. But for elite level play, I really like it,\u201d McIlroy added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know that\u2019s a really unpopular opinion amongst my peers, but I think it\u2019s going to help identify who the best players are a bit easier. If adopted, it would take effect in January 2026.<\/p>\n<p>Under the proposals, a ball struck at a laboratory-controlled swing speed of 127mph \u2013 up from 120mph \u2013 must not travel more than 320 yards<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GolfTodayUK\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">.<\/a> The change is expected to reduce hitting distance by 14-15 yards on average for the players with the
