{"id":1253130,"date":"2024-08-17T00:48:18","date_gmt":"2024-08-17T00:48:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/golftoday.co.uk\/?p=1253130"},"modified":"2024-08-17T07:25:03","modified_gmt":"2024-08-17T07:25:03","slug":"fedex-st-jude-championship-2024-r2-hideki-matsuyama-denny-mccarthy-tied-at-halfway-point","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/golftoday.co.uk\/fedex-st-jude-championship-2024-r2-hideki-matsuyama-denny-mccarthy-tied-at-halfway-point\/","title":{"rendered":"Hideki Matsuyama &amp; Denny McCarthy tied at halfway point"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Hideki Matsuyama and Denny McCarthy found their touch on the greens and are tied in first place at 11-under at the FedEx St Jude Championship.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/golftoday.co.uk\/mens-olympic-golf-competition-paris-2024-r1-hideki-matsuyama-takes-opening-lead-in-paris\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Matsuyama<\/a> \u2013 without his regular caddy and coach after their passports were stolen in London \u2013 recovered from finding the water on the short fourth hole to fire a 64, McCarthy going one better after holing three birdie putts from 25 feet or longer.<\/p>\n<p>They moved to 11-under par at a sweltering TPC Southwind in Memphis, the opening leg of the end-of-season FedEx Cup play-offs, to sit one ahead of Sam Burns who went out in 29 en route to a 63.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Highlights | Round 2 | FedEx St. Jude | 2024\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Ja6dJZV0ais?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>FedEx rankings leader and world number one Scottie Scheffler carded three late birdies in a 65 which leaves him on nine-under-par, one ahead of Justin Rose \u2013 who shot a second successive 66 \u2013 and American Nick Dunlap.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s just nice to have a clean card,\u201d said Scheffler said. \u201cNo bogeys, did a good job of having some nice up-and-downs to kind of keep the momentum and the round going.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With only the top 50 in the rankings reaching the second leg of the playoffs, the BMW Championship in Colorado, defending FedEx Cup champion Viktor Hovland moved into a qualifying spot as he moved to seven-under-par with a 63 after working on swing changes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI made a conscious effort to try to cut the ball more,\u201d said the Norwegian. \u201cWhen I did that, I ruined a relationship that happens in my swing that makes it really difficult for me to control the face coming down.<\/p>\n<p><!-- EMBED START Image --><\/p>\n<figure id=\"embeddedb79038c5b6b948bf99620a3cf2d0953d\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/\/content.assets.pressassociation.io\/AP\/2024\/08\/16\/b79038c5b6b948bf99620a3cf2d0953d.jpg?w=640\" alt=\"Scottie Scheffler lines up a putt\" data-title=\"St Jude Championship Golf\" data-copyright-holder=\"AP\" data-copyright-notice=\"Copyright 2024 The Associated Press.
