Matt Wallace carded a sensational, blemish-free 8-under-par in the final round of the BMW PGA Championship to climb inside the top 20 after starting the day in 44th.

The Englishman came out of the blocks flying, shooting a flawless 5-under-par 30 on the front nine, before carding another three birdies on the back nine.

Speaking with him after the round, Wallace said he felt comfortable on his home course.

“The driver clicked today. I got the ball in play, ball in hand as well, and then had some really good feels from the tee to green, and with my putting as well,” said the five-time DP World Tour winner.

“It felt like I was kind of like chasing the ball in this week, trying to make it go in rather than just hit a proper putt, hit it down the line that I’ve chosen and I felt really comfortable today.”

Having failed to qualify or receive a captain’s pick in 2018, 2021 and 2023, Matt Wallace has since been vocal about his ambitions to play Ryder Cup golf.

When asked about his determination to make the squad, the Englishman replied: “100 per cent, that’s all you need to know. I’ve spoken about it enough. Everyone knows it’s what pushes me on out there on every single shot, especially today, being in 44th place, 48th after being level par through four holes, hoping I can try and sneak a top 20 or top 15.”

With an 8th-placed finish at the British Masters — the first event of the Ryder Cup qualification process — and his first DP World Tour victory in six years at the Omega European Masters, Wallace has certainly started his campaign positively. However, it’s not the only goal he’s set out to achieve.

Currently 73rd in the Official World Golf Rankings, Wallace hopes to break into the top 50 by the end of the calendar year, a target that goes hand-in-hand with his Ryder Cup hopes.

“(I’d like to make) top 50 in the world, try to qualify for the Masters and The Players and continue pushing up the Ryder Cup rankings.”

After a strong finish at this week’s BMW PGA Championship, the Englishman’s goal is well within reach, but he’ll need to sustain his newfound form into 2025.
