The varying weather conditions are clearly\nfront and center. (Matthew Harris \/ TGPL)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>It does not take much\nfor any golfer &#8212; even the best in the world &#8212; to have a stellar round in\nprogress become derailed and with that end any opportunity to claim the famed\nClaret Jug.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>The name Jack Nicklaus\nis known to all golfers. And while much of the current spotlight has focused\nupon Tiger Woods when he claimed his 15th major triumph earlier this year at\nThe Masters, it&#8217;s important to itemize how stellar the Golden Bear was in his\nheyday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From 1963 through 1980,\nNicklaus demonstrated a consistency that defied reality. In those 18\nconsecutive Opens the Golden Bear won three times, placed second a record seven\ntimes, finished in the top five 16 times and only once did he finish outside of\nthe top ten with a 12th place finish. Nicklaus. Suffice to say &#8212; tour de force\ngolf.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div align=\"center\"><blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en-gb\"><p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">As golf looks ahead to <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TheOpen?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@theopen<\/a>, hope you don\u2019t mind if I look back &amp; \u201cenjoy for a minute\u201d my 1st Open title that unfolded this day in 1966. Meant so much to complete Grand Slam there, named my Ohio home club Muirfield Village! <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/40UpAeCWyu\">pic.twitter.com\/40UpAeCWyu<\/a><\/p>\u2014 Jack Nicklaus (@jacknicklaus) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jacknicklaus\/status\/1148391046780469249?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">9 July 2019<\/a><\/blockquote>\n<script async=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>What many may either not\nknow or fully appreciate is that though Nicklaus won 18 major golf\nchampionships \u2014 he also finished 2nd a mindboggling 19 times! To examine his\nrecord in the most minute detail \u2014 between 1966 and 1979 \u2014 Jack only finished\noutside the top three in <strong>The Open Championship<\/strong> just three times and in\nthose instances he finished tie for 6th in 1979, tied for 5th in 1971 and 4th\noutright in 1973. Suffice to say when Jack competed in The Open you knew he was\ngoing to be in the mix.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What many people\nsometimes do not weigh heavily enough is that golf is not just about the wins\nalone. It is about being able to be a consistent factor in the biggest events.\nAnd when one considers how totally unpredictable the day-to-day conditions can\neasily be during any Open Championship it speaks volumes in the manner by which\nNicklaus was able to thoroughly prepare himself time after time, years after\nyear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>The Open prides itself,\nquite rightly, in illuminating the character of golfers. It is rather easy for\nanyone to lose one&#8217;s concentration and get sidetracked by what happened rather\nthan what lies ahead. Nicklaus was the consummate tactician &#8212; being able to\ncomprehend the ever changing landscape and knowing when to be both aggressive\nand conservative as the situations unfolded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jack won two of his Open\nChampionships at the revered Old Course at St. Andrews. His first victory came\nin 1966 &#8212; at Muirfield. The victory made such an impressions on Nicklaus, he\nultimately named his home course Muirfield Village &#8211; just outside his hometown\nin Columbus, Ohio. The 1966 win also added the career Grand Slam to his record\nand, at that time, the youngest ever to accomplish that incredible feat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"283\" src=\"https:\/\/golftoday.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/nicklaus_1970_open_gi96.jpg\" alt=\"Nicklaus at the Open - The Golden Bear's Indelible Legacy\" class=\"wp-image-140066\"\/><figcaption>1970 Open at the Old Course in St Andrews<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>One needs to know the\nwherewithal of Nicklaus to change gears when the situation dictated. At the\n18th green of the playoff with Doug Sanders, the image of Nicklaus peeling off\nhis sweater and then driving <em>over<\/em> the green 358 yards away still boggles\nthe senses. Jack would then get his 2nd shot to eight feet and then hole the\nputt for the win.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>The secret to the Golden\nBear&#8217;s incredible consistency was a clear game plan &#8212; never pushing the limits\nin attempting reckless plays with little likelihood for success. Nicklaus\nstudied courses with an exact detail in realizing probabilities of success and\nfailure. In his triumph at Muirfield in 1966, the rough beyond the fairways was\nso dense and high that Jack quickly realized keep his tee ball in play at all\ntimes on the short grass was essential. Nicklaus played 1-iron tee shots and\navoided the big numbers that befell many of his competitors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>Much has been rightly\nwritten on the talents demonstrated by Tiger Woods and rightly so. Like\nNicklaus, Woods has two of his three Open titles at The Old Course. In his 2000\nvictory, Woods avoided all 112 bunkers throughout the 72 holes. But it was the\nmanner by which Tiger won the &#8217;06 Open at Royal Liverpool that added another\nmeaningful chapter to his stature and borrowed a page from the Nicklaus\nplaybook in its clinic-like precision. Woods eschewed usage of his driver all\nbut two times and provided a scintillating clinic hitting long and middle irons\ncloser than others were hitting short irons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div align=\"center\"><iframe width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/DaM7rxRk_BA\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>The Nicklaus record is layered far beyond\njust a recounting of his total number of major championships won. Jack&#8217;s\nwherewithal to size up situations &#8212; in the cauldron of high level competition\n&#8212; and then executing accordingly is often forgotten by those who only see the\ntalents of the present crop of top tier players.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This week\u2019s Open Championship at\nRoyal Portrush will once again provide another opportunity for golfers in\npursuit of The Claret Jug to think smartly when called upon during the most\npressure packed of moments..Nicklaus set a standard in elevating his game when\nsuch moments arose\u2014setting a high bar that may never be surpassed. In that\n18-year run at golf\u2019s oldest major event, the Golden Bear always kept himself\nin the hunt\u2014keeping himself close enough to the lead to make a timely move.\nJack was there, his competitors knew that and, most of all, Jack knew they knew\nit too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"327\" src=\"https:\/\/golftoday.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/jack_nicklaus_18th_major.jpg\" alt=\"Nicklaus at the Open - The Golden Bear's Indelible Legacy\" class=\"wp-image-140065\"\/><figcaption>Jack Nicklaus claims his 18th Major at the 1986 Masters<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>There are\nrevered past champions who clearly made their mark at The Open &#8212; with the\nlikes of Harry Vardon, Henry Cotton, Peter Thompson, Arnold Palmer, Gary Player,\nLee Trevino, Seve Ballesteros, Nick Faldo, among the most noted. But the\nNicklaus standard for year-to-year consistency remains among the supreme\ntriumphs in the game&#8217;s long history. One can only wonder how a Nicklaus in his\nprime would have fared at Royal Portrush this week.
