But more importantly, he was a member at The Broadmoor Golf Club\nin Colorado Springs.&nbsp; It was grand and historic; I just had such an energy\nwhenever I was on the property.&nbsp; The smell of the grass, trees and just\nbeing in nature, but in such a beautiful setting, empowered me.&nbsp; And if\nthat was not enough my grandfather, John Sonzini, an Italian born\n5-star&nbsp;chef, was the head chef at one point.&nbsp; I just loved being\nthere and could not wait to go with my father to the club and be on the course.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>I also always think about a story\nfrom a former mentor of mine and Arnold Palmer&#8217;s golf design partner, Ed\nSeay.&nbsp; Early on in my career, he said: \u201cSon, if you want to be any good at\nthis, you better understand the B\u2019s.\u201d&nbsp; I said, \u201cB\u2019s, what do you\nmean?\u201d&nbsp; He responded, \u201cBe the first one here, be the last one to\nleave.&nbsp; If you practice this every day, you will become the best there\nis.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"text-align:center\"><strong>***<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><br><strong>You wake up in the morning&#8211; what\u2019s the driving passion?\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The shear will to strive for excellence, the need to see the faces of the team each day and help them grow as people, as professionals and as an organization<a href=\"\/interview-with-chuck-thiry-xxio-usa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\". We were drawing plans\non mylar by hand, nobody had a computer.&nbsp; Now everything is in CAD and\nquantified down to the last little detail.&nbsp; Same with club management and\nagronomy; the chemistry of products is smarter.&nbsp; The spray equipment is\nGPS enabled, pinpointing the applications that can be tracked in mapping from\nGoogle Earth.&nbsp; It is amazing how fast we have advanced in the past 30\nyears due to technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><br><strong>What&#8217;s the biggest misconception golfers have in what you do daily?<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>That I must be a great\ngolfer.&nbsp; That I must play golf every day.&nbsp; Who has time for\nthat!&nbsp; It is a full-time job running the business and representing the\nresort.&nbsp; Playing golf only interferes with one\u2019s ability to operate.&nbsp;\nDon&#8217;t get me wrong, I love golf, but I am a professional in agronomy and\noperations.&nbsp; My role is to provide great leadership, so that we can roll\nout experiences that last a lifetime.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><br><strong>The toughest challenge for golf facilities to combat is what?<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Complacency, aging, staying\nrelevant, always looking fresh like the day you opened.&nbsp; I could go on for\na week on the challenges, I know you only asked for one, but it is a massive\nmultitasking environment, I only wish there was just one.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><br><strong>The growth of top tier facilities in Asia has really fast tracked in the last 10 or so years. Why do you think that&#8217;s happened and can the momentum that&#8217;s been achieved continue?<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Asia in general has awoken and\nclimbed onto the world stage as a world leader in many things.&nbsp; Singapore\nis like the NYC of Asia, as a shipping and financial hub.&nbsp; The development\nof China over the past 20 years is perhaps the most impressive climb ever seen\nin the industrial revolution.&nbsp; Naturally golf is just one of hundreds of\nthings Asia is beginning to lead at.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/golftoday.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Sentosa-18-2.jpg\" alt=\"Interview with Andrew Johnston - Sentosa Golf Club\" class=\"wp-image-160639\" srcset=\"https:\/\/golftoday.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Sentosa-18-2.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/golftoday.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Sentosa-18-2-970x545.jpg 970w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption>The golf experience intersects with land and the Singapore Strait<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><br><strong>Water is already a central topic for golf facilities &#8212; especially those in drier climates. How do you see the issue progressing especially as many pivotal environmental groups believe that the sport is a prime abuser of this critical resource?<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Those who view golf as a primary\nabuser of the climate are ignorant to how powerful golf is and how it can help\nwith the world\u2019s climate issues.&nbsp; One of the biggest problems with the\nfuture is the build-up of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere; it is rising at\nalarming rates.&nbsp; There are only two ways to remove it.&nbsp; Clean energy\nor photosynthesis.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Golf can be one of the world\u2019s\ngreatest vehicles to help reduce carbon, so we all need to bond together to\nmake sure we are working effectively.&nbsp; Water is an enormous issue\ntoo.&nbsp; Water management in golf must continue to improve.&nbsp; All golf\nclubs should follow our footprint of single head controls, because making every\nsprinkler head an individual station allows us to save up to 60% of our water\nresources.&nbsp; Irrigation software is also smarter and more efficient and can\nbe run to the nearest second rather than the nearest minute.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><br><strong>If you could change one thing in golf unilaterally &#8212; what would it be and why?<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>I would have had Arnold Palmer\nlive for eternity.&nbsp; The reason is obvious.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><br><strong>The major golf organizations &#8212; R&amp;A, USGA, PGA of America, PGA and European Tours, LPGA &#8212; are all seeking ways to attract Millennials, women and minorities to the sport.
